Burleigh revives Blue Willow from its archives

Burleigh has announced the launch of an iconic design that has been carefully and authentically revived from its archives – Blue Willow. Originally launched in 1924, Blue Willow looks to the timeless love of blue and white ceramics that has prevailed over the centuries.

“Few colour pairings have stood the test of time like the beautiful marriage of blue and white. Inky navy hues infuse drama and energy into a space, whilst crisp white balances out the scheme,” explains Alison Howell, Design and Development Manager, at Burleigh. “Mimicking the sunny sky filled with white clouds, it’s a classic combination that never dates and always feels fresh. Consider layering ceramicware, like our new Blue Willow collection, with blue and white chequered table linens and floral chair cushions. This creates a tablescape – perfect for Easter – with depth and dimension, whilst remaining cohesive.”

Originally launched in 1924, Blue Willow looks to the timeless love of blue and white ceramics that has prevailed over the centuries. In the 18th Century, the British Isles had developed a thirst not just for the wonderful tea exported from the Far East, but also for the beautiful hand-painted blue and white tea wares to drink from. Blue Willow was born from this movement. Officially known as ‘Dilwyn’ Willow, the timeless design features elements inspired by the East – the flora, fauna and architecture.

Burleigh is a British brand that has been handcrafting pottery in the town of Burslem, England, since 1851. Located in Stoke-on-Trent, the home of English pottery, every piece of Burleigh ware is meticulously handcrafted in Middleport Pottery, its home since 1889. A brand that prides itself on a sustained use of time-honoured manufacturing processes, Burleigh is the only pottery in the world to decorate its wares using tissue transfer printing, a method dating back over 250 years. There are now just 12 craftspeople in the world who have the precise skills needed to continue Burleigh’s decorative lineage.
